Steelflex® Modular Expansion Joint Systems Support Cline Avenue Bridge

Cline Avenue Bridge

D.S. Brown Steelflex® Modular Expansion Joint Systems have gained overwhelming worldwide acceptance for accommodating and sealing large joint movements on projects like the Cline Avenue Bridge in East Chicago, Indiana. Our Expansion Joint Systems have a proven track record in bridge projects and are designed to provide watertight, fatigue resistant, long-term, maintenance-free performance.

When finished, the Cline Avenue Bridge (6,236-feet long with 170- to 300-foot spans) will carry two lanes of traffic over the Indiana Harbor Canal. The main span of the $150 million project will be about 316 feet.

Modular expansion joint assemblies are subjected to millions of high dynamic stress cycles due to passing vehicle loads. Long before the Cline Avenue Bridge project, the D.S. Brown Company recognized the significance of these types of dynamic loads on the long-term performance of expansion joint systems, and as a result, became the first North American company to introduce fatigue-resistant design principles to modular expansion joint assemblies.

“Our Steelflex® Expansion Joint Systems meet the most rigorous standards,” Vice President of Sales & Marketing Tom Lewis said. “We’re very proud to have these Expansion Joint Systems widely specified by bridge owners as an effective, long-lasting joint system for the most important infrastructure projects in the country.”

Each Steelflex® Modular Expansion Joint System not only bridges the joint gap but also protects structures like the Cline Avenue Bridge from premature corrosion. Design of the strip seal sealing element is based on compression of the neoprene seal lug into the gland recess of the center beam and edge beam. This mechanically locked neoprene seal not only provides excellent watertight characteristics but also achieves high pullout resistance.
