Delastic® Preformed Compression Seals perform one job perfectly

Above: Delastic® Preformed Pavement seals effectively protect concrete pavement in highways, airport aprons and airport runways like Lubbock (Texas) Preston Smith International Airport by keeping moisture, debris, and incompressible material out of the joint opening.

Delastic® Preformed Pavement Seals for concrete pavement have one main purpose: to successfully prevent water and debris from entering the joint. Seal failure can cause pavement to crack, chip, buckle and prematurely deteriorate. D.S. Brown’s Delastic Preformed Pavement Seals, also known as compression joint seals, are installed in a compressed state and remain in contact with the pavement joint walls while allowing the concrete pavement to expand and contract during temperature changes. Delastic® Preformed Pavement Seals are extruded from compounds of polychloroprene (neoprene) which meet or exceed current ASTM standard specifications.

Since 1960, D.S. Brown’s Delastic Preformed Pavement Seals have met the critical challenges posed each day on the highways and airport runways that carry our commerce and families.

Delastic Seals are easy to install and minimize the opportunities for pavement cracking, chipping, buckling and premature deterioration. Delastic Preformed Pavement Seals are the longest lasting joint sealant available and are preferred because they have the lowest lifecycle cost compared with other types of FAA-approved sealants.

Lubbock Airport Joint Replacement Project

Meet Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport in Lubbock, Texas. This old military base near the Texas panhandle was operating with multiple concrete pavement runways of various ages.

Lubbock’s latest project, Runway 8-26, was in dire need of a complete joint replacement project. The existing liquid sealant was well past its lifespan thus allowing water, debris and jet fuel into the joints leading to pavement deterioration. Lubbock Airport had typically used liquid sealants until the reseal of Runway 8-26.

D.S. Brown worked with Texas based Parkhill Smith & Cooper to walk the runway and design a plan to reseal with Delastic Preformed Neoprene Compression Seals. After team evaluation, a plan was agreed upon to slightly widen the joints to a consistent width and utilize Delastic Preformed Neoprene Compression Seal.

To mitigate any sliver spalling, the joints were also beveled with a 1/4” chamfer. Because of the specific design work performed by Parkhill Smith & Cooper, the contractor was able to quickly remove the existing seal and reseal the pavement soon after, leading to a successful project.

Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport now has a long-term pavement joint solution that also provides better water drainage on the runway.
